House Training Tip's for You and Your Yorkie
As your puppy shifts his dependence to you as his
owner and leader, you will become the center of his world. He
will probably like to lie down on top of or beside your feet.
He will be curious about everything around him. It is
very important to immediately start the potty training as soon
as your pup crosses your threshold!
I would not recommend you paper train your puppy,
unless the weather is just to cold to get him outdoors. When you
paper train you are giving your puppy mixed signals by letting
him relieve himself in the house. Also I would recommend crate
training your puppy at the same time you are potty training. You
can read more on crate training here.
Yorkshire Terriers are very courious, and this courosity
will often get them in trouble. It is hard not to melt with those
sweet faces and sparkling eyes gazing at you like you are their
Queen. But it is very important to set rules with training, don't
spoil them by inadvertently encouraging bad behavior. Please train
your Yorkie to behave as any other dog. You
can read more about behavior training your Yorkie here.
Keep in mind that your puppy has a very short attention
span at this age and is easily distracted. At an earlier age he
had little sense of fear. But at the ages of 10-12 weeks he may
suddenly be cautious of anything new in his environment. This
period of fear is normal it is important to be aware of this sensitive
and try to prevent undue trauma to him.
Even though your puppy has a short attention
span at this age it is important to introduce "pre-training
activities" Here are a few basic behaviors to work on:
- Introducing a collar
- following on a leash
- coming when called
(Keep each session short only about 3 minutes long, with emphasis
on fun, using plenty of trats and praise).
*Remember that your puppies immunity isn't established
yet, and you should not let your puppy venture out of his own area.
After the routine vaccinations it is safe to have your puppy enrolled
in training classes which is strongly advised education and interaction
for both you and puppy.
You can start with basic potty training activities, like getting
them out as soon as they finish eating and immediately after they
are up from naps. Not until your puppy is between 12-16 weeks old
will they be able to control their bladder and bowel movements,
so up until this age you should get up with them to take them outdoors
to their potty area during the night.
With potty training is it best to supervise your puppy at all times
when they are out of their crate, especially during the first few
weeks. You will be surprized at how quickly they will respond if
there are no accidents in the house.
Other then regularly scheduled times to take your Yorkie out to
potty, I would suggest you be aware of certain behavior's when your
pup needs to go. The most common behavior is walking in circles.
The pup is look for the right spot, at this time pick him up and
immediately take him outdoors to the designated area. Make sure
to talk to him at this time, such as outside, or go potty. Your
Puppy will learn quickly from your tone of voice what you are wanting
him to do. Some puppies will act by finding a hidden place so when
your puppy wants to crawl behind your sofa or in a corner, it is
time to get him outdoors!
Keep in mind that if you can avoid any accidents you are well on
your way to success with potty training. A little time and devotion
to this training in the first few weeks will pay off.
